Pyromaniac Arrested In Arson At Synagogue

Compiled From Wire Services

A pyromaniac has been arrested in a May arson attack that destroyed a storeroom at a synagogue on the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender.

The 27-year-old man, who “often set fires” in the past, was arrested Sept. 8 and was jailed in investigative custody, police spokesman Winfried Tabarelli said Tuesday.

A 16-year-old detained with the suspect in connection with two other fires in the city told police that the older man had bragged about setting the synagogue fire on May 7.

Police said they had no evidence to link the suspect to radical rightists.

The fire outraged citizens of Luebeck, who placed bouquets of flowers at the site in a demonstration of solidarity with the Jews in the northern city.
