Silvernail Hammers Usc

Sarah Silvernail had a season-high 28 kills and added 11 digs Friday as 16th-ranked Washington State up-ended 12th-ranked Southern Cal 15-9, 16-14, 15-5 in a Pacific-10 Conference volleyball opener at Pullman.

WSU (8-0) rallied from a 14-11 deficit to win the middle game, the final two points on Silvernail kills.

Shannon Wyckoff added 23 digs and 14 kills and Stephanie Papke 51 assists for WSU. Jennifer Kessy had 22 kills for the Trojans (0-1, 2-2).

Kristy Johnson’s 26 assists led No. 1-ranked Nebraska (6-1) to a 15-2, 15-1, 15-4 win over Gonzaga at the Wyoming Tournament in Laramie.

Cornhuskers coach Terry Pettit won his 600th career match. Kristy Kubista had seven kills and 11 digs for the Bulldogs (1-8).

Eastern Washington concluded a nine-match California trip by splitting two matches and finishing fourth in the Santa Clara Tournament.

Eastern (2-8) beat Texas-Pan American 15-17, 15-12, 15-8, 15-5 before bowing to Colorado State 15-11, 16-14, 10-15, 15-11. EWU’s Kellie Glaus had 34 kills and 14 blocks.

Jemena Yocom came off the bench to notch 19 kills as Idaho (7-2) beat Oral Roberts 18-16, 6-15, 15-11, 15-8 at the Vandals’ Safeco/Branegan’s Classic in Moscow.

Community Colleges of Spokane fashioned a 2-1 record during the opening day of its Friendship Tournament at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch beat Sheridan 3-15, 15-3, 15-7 and Olympic 15-0, 15-2. CCS then lost 15-4, 14-16, 15-11 to College of Southern Idaho, which had the day’s best record at 3-0.

Brandi Row’s 13 kills and 33 digs guided visiting Willamette (6-0) to a 15-8, 15-10, 15-6 win over Whitworth (1-9) in a conference opener. Kim Steinbrucker had 18 assists and Mandy Decious 37 digs for the Pirates.

Women’s soccer

Courtney Mathieson scored early as Montana (3-2-0) defeated Washington State 2-1 at Missoula. Shalli DeWitt scored for WSU (1-2-1).
