Loyd Lawson Hayden, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Loyd Thomas Lawson, 83, will be today at 1 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lawson, who was born in Huron, S.D., died Saturday at home.

He was raised and educated in South Dakota, later becoming a farmer. He held barn dances on his farm until 1937, attracting musicians such as Lawrence Welk.

He married Vera Funk in 1937 and continued to farm in South Dakota. They owned and operated a restaurant in the 1940s and ‘50s in Bristol, S.D., before moving to Hayden in 1955.

He worked in local saw mills, retiring from Northwest Timber in 1976. He helped with the construction of the original St. Pius X Church site.

Mr. Lawson enjoyed fishing, hunting and wood carving. He was also an avid cribbage player.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, at home; two sons, Ron Lawson of Lacey, Wash., and Jerry Lawson of Puyallup, Wash.; one daughter, Kathie Gill of Hayden; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to the North Idaho Cancer Center, St. Pius X Church, or Hospice of North Idaho.

Charles Thompson Kellogg

Service for Charles Ross Thompson, 76, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel in Kellogg. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thompson died Saturday at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg.

He was born in Rapid City, S.D., and was adopted by Henry Ross and Edith Thompson.

He married Margaret Carpenter in 1939.

Mr. Thompson was a plumber who owned and operated his own plumbing company in Wyoming. He also had worked for the University of Wyoming as a plumber before retiring.

He moved to Kellogg in 1987 from Laramie, Wyo.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Osburn and the Moose and Vasa lodges in Laramie. He was also a member of the Church of Christ and Plumbers Local Union Local 192.

Mr. Thompson enjoyed fishing, woodcrafts and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994, one brother and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Charles “Ross” Thompson of Agoura Hills, Calif.; one daughter, Charlotte Smith of Kellogg; two brothers, Earl and Ernie Barton, both of Rapid City; one sister, Millie Sloan of Oregon; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gary Hayes Rose Lake, Idaho

Graveside service for Gary H. Hayes, 42, was Monday at the Rose Lake Cemetery in Rose Lake. Yates Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hayes died Wednesday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born in Los Angeles, where he grew up and attended schools. He moved to Rose Lake in 1979 and worked as a clipper operator at Hill Top Cedar for 16 years.

He enjoyed metal detecting, fishing and bird feeding.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Frey, in 1989.

Survivors include his son, Gary Hayes of Bellflower, Calif.; his mother, Betty Hayes of Hayden; and two brothers, Richard Hayes of Troy, Mont., and Dennis Hayes of Black Lake, Idaho.

Margaret Fry Spokane

Service for Margaret A. Fry, 83, will be at 8:30 a.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Fry, who died Friday in Vancouver, Wash., was born in Clarkston, Wash.

She was a longtime Spokane resident and moved to Vancouver in 1979.

She is survived by two sons, Stewart and Carl Fry, both of Spokane; two daughters, Carla McMacken and Alison Herdener, both of Vancouver; three sisters, Virginia Love of Seattle, Louise Fulseth of Aberdeen, Wash., and Patricia Prudhomme of Kennewick; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Iona Schultz Rathdrum, Idaho

Service for Iona Doris Schultz, 78, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Yates Funeral Chapel in Hayden Lake, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Yates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schultz, who was born in Florida, died Friday at home.

She was raised and attended schools in Florida and married Henry Schultz in 1932. They moved to Sandpoint in 1940 and to Rathdrum in 1944.

She was an active bowler for many years and enjoyed camping and traveling.

Survivors include her husband, at home; three sons, Robert Schultz of Coeur d’Alene, and Duane and Dick Schultz, both of Post Falls; four daughters, Ellen Langston of Panacea, Fla., Dolores Singer of Rathdrum, Rita Walls of Medford, Ore., and Diana Pope of Hayden Lake; two brothers, William Zigler of California and Donald Zigler of Post Falls; 23 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren.

Joe Pilik Post Falls

Graveside service for Joe “Railroad Joe” Pilik, 82, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel of Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pilik, who was born in Chicago, died Sunday at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.

He was raised on the family homestead on the Bull River in Montana and moved to Spokane at age 12. He moved to Post Falls in 1966.

He married Paula Parrish in 1939.

He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a locomotive engineer from 1939 to 1978.

Mr. Pilik was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and enjoyed playing pool. He was also a master fly fisherman.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, at home; one son, Joe Pilik of Spokane; two daughters, Faye Stephenson of Loon Lake, Wash., and Valera Kingsley of Post Falls; one sister, Ella Ewing of Spokane; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Athol Shields Coeur d’Alene

Service for Athol J. Shields, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Priest River Ward. Graveside dedication will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shields, a former Priest River resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Magna, Utah, and moved to Sandpoint in 1918 with his family.

Mr. Shields worked as a sawyer in North Idaho and as a log scaler for the Forest Service.

He retired in 1973.

A gunsmith, he was an instructor at the Priest River Junior Rifle Club and taught hunter safety courses.

His wife, Lydia, died in 1990, and he moved to Coeur d’Alene.

He is survived by one son, Stanley Shields of Coeur d’Alene; one sister, Wanda Pugmire of Salt Lake City; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Earl Seitters Colville, Wash.

Service for Earl D. Seitters, 83, was Monday at Colville United Methodist Church. Vault interment will be at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel of Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Seitters died Friday. He was born in Inverness, Mont.

He moved to the Colville area in 1925.

He graduated from high school in Colville in 1930.

He and his wife, Viola, lived on the dairy farm they operated.

Mr. Seitters was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Colville Valley Grange and Stevens County Pomona Grange.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years; three daughters, Debbie Baerlocher of Lewiston, and Kathy Berg and Judy Galli, both of Colville; one son, Richard Seitters of Colville; one brother, Charles Seitters of Colville; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Colville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Marie Jenness Spokane

Graveside service for Marie Annett Jenness, 94, will be at 11 a.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home of Priest River is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Jenness, who died Thursday, was born in Hagar, Okla.

She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane and received a teaching degree from Cheney Normal School.

She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Miss Jenness taught elementary school in Montana, Idaho and Washington.

She was a member of the Master Gardeners and the Washington State Teachers Association.

She is survived by one sister, Chloe Robinson of Newport, Wash.
