Boyz Ii Men First Big Concert For Arena
Motownphilly is back again! However, instead of rocking The Gorge at George, Boyz II Men will be the first big-name group to play the new Spokane Arena. Their smooth ballads and hip hop beats, along with the rap of newcomer artist Montell Jordan, will help celebrate 93 Zoo FM’s birthday bash, marking 11 years on the air.
Monday’s concert will give the Arena its first taste of contemporary sound. Ticket sales have been fairly slow, perhaps because the group has already played in the area. Tickets are selling for $27.50 and $37.50 through G&B Select-A-Seat. The Zoo has also promised to give away truckloads of tickets and backstage passes until the day of the concert. Get pepped: And for all you wild and crazy seniors wanting to prepare for your college entrance exams, Whitworth College will offer a non-credit course this fall to help high school students pass to the best of their ability.
This four-session College Entrance Exam Review will take place Saturdays, Sept. 23 through Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon in room 214 of Dixon Hall at Whitworth. The class costs $70 and requires a textbook that can be purchased at the first class session for $15.
The class will include a review of math and verbal skills, an introduction to types of questions, reasoning and data interpretations, and simulated time tests. For more info or to register for this class, call the Whitworth College Lindaman Center at 466-3291.
Teen leaders: The Spokane Leadership Institute, a volunteer group of teens who want to be involved in their community, has some announcements.
SLI is open to ninth through 12th grade students who want to have a say in the community. Each year, SLI chooses issues important to teens. Last school year, they created a poster to encourage positive relations between teens and adults, and also trained members in suicide prevention.
A current project, a newsletter entitled Sliver, helps inform teens about opportunities to become involved. New members are always welcome! For more information on meeting times and places, call Anita at 448-2678. The following two items are from the Sliver newsletter.
PACE (Peers Advocating Communication and Empowerment) is the perfect thirst-quencher for the parched student interested in drama and their community.
Luckily for area teens, half of the PACE members graduated, leaving several holes in the production. Interested students can be in plays dealing with universal themes such as “Growing Up Is Hard To Do,” which they put on last year. The next show, for the “Healthy Youth: Creating Our Future” conference, takes place on Oct. 2. If you are in the ninth to 12th grades and are interested, please call Jodi Porter at 324-1527.
Its P.A.R.T.Y time!
“Parents Are Relieved, Time for Youth” time, anyway, every Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.
This special event, hosted by Grace Baptist Church, is cross-denominational and centered around Christ. Admission is just a bag of snacks, and drinks are provided.
Grace Baptist Church is located at 1523 W. Mallon (corner of Broadway and Mallon). For more information, call Larry Harpster at 328-9433.<
