Despite Loss, Bears Proud Of Performance
Central Valley’s first volleyball victory over Shadle Park in 10 years was akin to winning a state championship, said first-year coach Laurie Henry.
The way the Bears played against University in defeat, was even better.
“Even our Shadle Park win was without the heart these girls showed,” Henry said. “The U-Hi game was bigger for us, even though we lost.”
Central Valley played flawlessly for two games with brilliant digs and excellent passing that counteracted U-Hi’s attack.
Carrie Sanders had an overpowering game, Crystal Lee was sharp up front, and sophomore Rikki Jackson played well in the back row.
They had the Titans on the ropes late in the decisive fifth game before losing at the end.
“We’re definitely making progress,” said Henry. “It’s not the wins or losses which measure our success. Are the kids improving? Are they having fun?”
Central Valley’s improvement was evident last week.
“CV is better than people think,” said U-Hi’s Rik Austing.
Unlike other teams with fancy offenses and defenses, Henry said CV has had to concentrate on basics.
“We’re taking baby steps,” she said. “We look at the little picture and take it game by game.
“The girls are not giving up on the court any more.”
