Heisman hopefuls

Tommie Frazier, RB/Sr. Nebraska: In Huskers’ 49-7 win over Pacific, Fraizer had a sub-par day in gusty winds and finished with 6 of 14 completions for 90 yards and one INT. He scored one touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Leeland McElroy, RB/Jr. Texas A&M: In Aggies’ 29-21 loss to No. 7 Colorado, the Buffs attacking defense shocked ‘Lectric Leeland and held him to 52 yards on 23 carries. McElroy had one 4-yard touchdown run to bring his yearly total to eight in three games.

Eddie George, RB, Ohio State: Buckeyes improve to 3-0 and George has been a major part of their early success. In 54-14 win over Pitt, the tailback rushed for 122 yards on 24 carries. He did not score a touchdown.

Karim Abdul-Jabbar, RB/Sr., UCLA: Much like the Bruins, Adbul-Jabbar could be falling out of the race fast. In UCLA’s 24-15 loss Saturday, Cougars held the running back to 125 yards on 28 carries. Most of the damage was done in the second half.

Warrick Dunn, RB, Florida St. In No. 1 team’s 46-14 14 win over Central Florida, Dunn rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries and scored from 2 yards out.

Streaks, sacks and stats

Penn extended its winning streak to 23 games with a 28-8 win over Lafayette.

Charleston Southern lost its 19th straight game, 15-6 to Ferrum.

Princeton limited Rich Lemon of Bucknell to 15 yards on 13 carries to end the running back’s streak of 100-yard rushing games at 17. Lemon was three shy of the NCAA Division I-AA record for consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Virginia Tech sacked Miami quarterbacks six times and had six tackles behind the line of scrimmage in a 13-7 upset of the Hurricanes.

Robert Hull of Washington & Lee set a school record with five sacks and the Generals recorded eight in a 7-7 tie with Centre.

Notables

Ty King of Miami of Ohio returned a kickoff 82 yards for a TD with 19 seconds left to give the Redskins a 23-16 win over Cincinnati in the 100th meeting between the two schools.

Troy Davis the nation’s leading rusher, ran for a school-record 302 yards and five TDs as Iowa State defeated UNLV 57-30.
