Kootenai County Also Changing Some Signs

Drivers can view eight Sunsets and five Sunrises in a single day in Kootenai County.

But not for long.

County planners here also are in the midst of a two-year plan to change duplicate street names.

A new county law has been passed and notices mailed to more than 2,500 Rathdrum-area residents whose addresses will change. Some changes already have been made.

“We’re steadily working our way south to fix the problems,” said County Planning Director Cheri Howell.

Problems aren’t limited to duplication. Some areas have odd- and even-numbered houses on the same side of the street. Others have street numbers that aren’t sequential.

Planners estimate as many as 50 road names will be changed.

Duplicate names in different cities - like Garden Avenue in Dalton Gardens, which is parallel and one mile north of Garden Avenue in Coeur d’Alene - won’t change unless there’s a road of the same name in the county. Then the county will change whichever causes the fewest hassles for residents.

Planners are allowing neighborhood groups to rename their streets.

Some recent suggestions include “Jacka Loop,” “Dirt Road” and “Lois Lane.”

“We’re always open to suggestions, you know,” Howell said.
