Take A Walk To Help Fund Diabetes Research

The Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho chapters of the American Diabetes Association will sponsor “Walktoberfest,” a walk-a-thon, Sunday at Sullivan Park.

The walk’s purpose is to raise funds for diabetes research. More than 14 million Americans suffer from the disease.

Some 400 people are expected to participate in the 10-kilometer walk following the Centennial Trail.

Check-in time is at 9 a.m.; the walk begins at 10. Walkers must register by 4 p.m., Thursday. For registration information, call (800) 254-WALK.

Skin-care clinic

Group Health Northwest will host a skin-care clinic at the Corbin Community Center, 827 W. Cleveland, from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday.

Entitled “Skin Care and Sun Savvy,” the clinic, led by Dr. David Johnson, will discuss skin care information, common skin problems, treatment options and ways to avoid skin damage.

‘Wellness Trek’

Starting Monday, Oct. 2, Holy Family Hospital will introduce the “Wellness Trek,” a six-week walking program to good health.

During the class, students will learn good stretching and strength-building exercises and healthful eating habits.

Classes are from 1 to 2 p.m., or from 5 to 6 p.m.

The cost is $30, which includes class materials.

Joint replacement surgery

It’s a common problem: joints deteriorate.

On Tuesday, at the Deaconess Health and Education Center, Dr. James Perry will discuss joint replacement surgery, expected results and alternatives to having the procedure. He’ll also give self-care tips.

The discussion lasts from noon to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5; Women’s Health Network members and Health Access members attend free. Participants may bring a lunch.
