Idaho Qbs Will Share Time

Jim Meehan Staff Writer

As he did against Sonoma State two weeks ago, Idaho football coach Chris Tormey plans to start Brian Brennan at quarterback and also use Eric Hisaw against Idaho State on Saturday.

Both players were efficient against the woeful Cossacks. Their season stats are virtually identical: Brennan 14 of 32 for 183 yards, three touchdowns and a 116.4 rating; Hisaw 14 of 30 for 175 yards, three TDs and a 115.3 rating.

“The key is that we have success on offense, so it’s not an issue,” Tormey said. “A lot of it gets blown out of proportion if the offense struggles - it’s always (perceived to be) the quarterback (struggling), and that’s not always the case.

“From our standpoint, it’d be ideal if we can play both and have the ability to change the game, like Nebraska did in the Orange Bowl. It kept Florida State off balance.”

Tormey said running back Joel Thomas (knee surgery on Sept. 11) should be at or near full strength by Saturday, but backup Lavoni Kidd should expect more carries.

Broncos shakeup

Last season, Boise State meshed a bunch of junior college transfers into one of the league’s best offensive lines. The last two weeks, that same unit has disgusted offensive coordinator Dave Stromswold.

In particular, Stromswold is peeved at tackles Keith Jeffery and Jordan LePiane. The two might be replaced by sophomores.

Elsewhere, fullback Del Graven has been yanked from the starting lineup. Tommy Edwards has moved to fullback and freshman Eron Hurley will start at halfback.

The comeback kid

Telly Lockette, a junior linebacker at Idaho State, was hit in the head at a Miami bar in May 1994. He doesn’t know what the object was that hit him or why he was the target.

He nearly died that night, suffering a fractured skull. He’s since had several surgeries and a metal/plastic plate about the size of a quarter inserted in his head.

“I heard doctors say, ‘We’re losing him,”’ Lockette recalled of waking up on a hospital gurney. “I didn’t know who they were talking about. I tried to get up, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t even open my eyes.”

Lockette, originally a running back, missed the ‘94 season, but has returned to a new position where he’s third on the team in tackles.

He suffers from nightmares and sleeplessness. He once went four days without a wink. His lawsuit seeking $15,000 from the Miami nightclub is pending. The club says Lockette’s injury was due to his negligence.

Pucker up, Pokey

BSU coach Pokey Allen said he’d stand in line and kiss each fan above 20,000 for Saturday’s home game vs. Northwestern (La.) State.
