Sunfair Cross Country Invite To Have Team-Oriented Flavor

The 21st edition of the state’s largest cross country invitational won’t resemble No. 20.

True, Saturday’s SunFair at Yakima will again draw nearly 60 teams and 1,500 runners.

But this year’s spotlight has shifted, said race organizer Phil English.

“The past years have been great individual battles,” said the Eisenhower coach. “This year it’s really a battle of teams.”

Heading that list will be the first showdown between top-ranked Mead and No. 2 Ferris, Greater Spokane League boys rivals who haven’t jostled since Mead’s close win at last year’s district.

Mead’s boys and girls are defending SunFair champs.

Eight of the top 10 ranked teams for boys and girls are scheduled to attend. The host and top-ranked Cadets will be chased by GSL girls powers University, Ferris, Mead, Central Valley and Shadle Park.

Adam Gist of Kent-Meridian, ninth last year, is the top boys returner in flight seven (for No. 1 runners). Billy Harmon of Centennial of Boise and Matt Kerr of Kennewick are the favorites.

Defending flight seven girls champ Aleah Thome of Ike is nursing a pulled hip muscle and will run in a middle flight. The elite field is wide-open, with six of last year’s top-10 finishers eligible to return.

Course records belong to GSL runners: Matt Davis of Mead in 1993 (14 minutes, 48 seconds) and Sarah Schwald of Rogers in 1990 (17:24).
