Pga Rookie Takes Lead

PGA Tour rookie Bill Porter shot a 7-under-par 65 and held a one-shot lead after the first round of the Buick Challenge in Pine Mountain, Ga.

Steve Lowery, Steve Stricker and Larry Mize shared second with 66s. Kirk Triplett, formerly of Pullman, shot 71.

Hiromi Kobayashi made six birdies in a seven-hole stretch and took the first-round lead of the $500,000 LPGA Fieldcrest-Cannon Classic with a 7-under-par 65 in Cornelius, N.C.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot 69. Clarkston’s Robin Walton shot 73.
