Yanks Remain In Hunt For Berth

With the wild card spot on the line, the New York Yankees pulled off their first ninth-inning comeback of the season Friday night when Pat Kelly’s two-run homer capped a four-run rally for a 4-3 victory over Toronto.

The Yankees cut their magic number for clinching a playoff spot to two over California.

Angels 9, Athletics 6

Anaheim, Calif.

J.T. Snow and Rex Hudler each had four hits and drove in two runs as California won. The win kept the Angels two games behind Seattle in the A.L. West race with two to play and one game behind the New York Yankees for the wild card berth.

Indians 9, Royals 2

Cleveland

Paul Sorrento hit two of Cleveland’s three home runs, and Orel Hershiser was sharp in his last tuneup for the playoffs as Cleveland beat Kansas City.

Red Sox 11, Brewers 9

Milwaukee

John Valentin drove in four runs and Bill Haselman knocked in three as Boston beat Milwaukee.

Orioles 6, Tigers 0

Baltimore

Kevin Brown allowed five hits in Baltimore’s third straight shutout and Bobby Bonilla drove in three runs as the Orioles beat Detroit.

White Sox 4, Twins 3

Chicago

Pinch-hitter Chris Snopek hit a run-scoring single with one out in the bottom of the ninth that gave Chicago a victory over Minnesota.

Clearing the bases

Detroit called a news conference for Monday at which Sparky Anderson will announce his resignation, ending a 17-year run with the Tigers, the Detroit Free Press reported today… . About 200 people called the hospital where Minnesota’s Kirby Puckett was staying after he was hit in the face by a Dennis Martinez fastball.
