Say no to 4-period day at Freeman High
A March 14 communique to parents from the Student Learning Committee at Freeman High School has in my opinion ended consideration of the four-period school day at Freeman.
After campaigning vigorously for more than a year in an attempt to sell Freeman parents and taxpayers on the curriculum change, Freeman announced that only 54 parents responded favorably to the fouri-period day in a pilot program exit survey.
School officials insist they will present the controversial program and ask for approval from the school board despite the lack of community support.
But I believe that if enough Freeman voters contact their board members this issue will now die the quick death it deserves.
Perhaps Freeman parents and taxpayers will use this opportunity to unite in asking the question, “When can we return Freeman High to the gentle, friendly, rural school we all knew and loved?” Tim Lederle Mica
Incorporation backers show their arrogance
Living in the Spokane Valley resembles that movie where the man kept reliving the same day over and over.
For us, the nightmare is incorporation year after year.
The incorporation effort is now like harassment. Proponents should not be permitted to force this issue upon us yearly.
The current incorporation tactic is to divide and hopefully conquer. It is obvious the incorporation people have no one’s interest in mind but their own.
When does no by the majority finally mean no?
Their motives should be questioned. They want their control so need to change the rules so they can hopefully get it.
Their arrogance is appalling.
There are many legitimate reasons not to incorporate. A divided and fractured Valley is not the way to solve the problems that exist in the entire Valley. A city the size of proposed Evergreen would not have much clout, something that seems important these days. Nor does it have a large commercial tax base.
It is easy to find facts that disprove some of their biggest reasons for incorporating.
Their stated opposition to voting by mail is not the reason at all. What they do not want is for people who know the truth to have the time to vote.
They are counting on voter apathy to finally get their way. Why have they done so little promoting and campaigning this time? Think about it. Janeen Thompson Greenacres
Community center plan is wonderful
I think the proposal to transform the present site of the zoo into a community center is a wonderful idea.
It is too bad, this could have had a strong beginning back in 1990. Like Federal Way has done since incorporating as a city, grant money was probably in greater amounts and availability than now.
This center should truly be a community center. “Poisoning the waters” by individuals with large amounts of money has three times convinced Valley citizens that if they voted for incorporation the “sky would be falling.” Other bad things would also be sure to happen. Vern Slichter Spokane
