Missions ‘96 Planned At First Presbyterian

Missions. The word usually conjures up thoughts of missionaries taking Christianity to Third World countries, spreading the Gospel to those living in poverty.

A mission field, however, can be as near as one’s next-door neighbor, as well as a continent or two away.

Missions ‘96 is the theme for a seminar Friday-April 14 at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar.

There will be speakers - national and local - workshops, videos, booths, displays … all centering on missions at home and abroad.

Alex Smith, the Northwest regional director of OMF International; Tekla Sallasie of World Vision International; and Dick York, founder and director of ministry of Shield of Faith are three of the featured speakers, said Dan Grether, spokesman.

Hours and admission are: Friday, 5-9 p.m., $2.50; Saturday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $5; and Sunday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., free.

For more information, call 924-7096 or 747-1058.

Two pastors new to city

There are two new ministers in Spokane - one at North Addison Baptist and the other at Mountain Church of the Nazarene.

The Rev. Myron Person on Sunday will preach his first sermon at North Addison, a Southern Baptist church at 6120 N. Addison.

Person, 46, a former veterinarian, is completing work on a Master of Divinity degree at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Portland.

He received a Master of Veterinary Science degree from Washington State University and was an assistant professor there from 1982 to 1989, when he decided to enter the ministry.

He spent two years as an assistant minister in Battle Ground, Wash., before moving to Scappose, Ore., where he ministered the past five years.

And, on the other side of town, Mountainview Church of the Nazarene, 3525 E. 57th, welcomed its new pastor, the Rev. J. Eric Stilwell, on March 25.

Stilwell, a native of Grandview, Wash., graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, and received a master’s degree in religious education from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo.

He served churches in Pennsylvania before becoming a youth pastor at Kennewick Church of the Nazarene.
