Hints From Heloise
Dear Heloise: It’s important for me to understand auto maintenance because these days it’s hard to find a good mechanic. Women, especially, may be apprehensive about choosing a mechanic. Plus, there’s always a chance that women might be taken advantage of because over the years they have, sadly, gotten the reputation of being helpless when it comes to auto maintenance.
I’m lucky because my dad knows a lot about cars. Every time we work on my truck, his truck, or my mom’s car, I’m always there to help. Women should know their oil filter size, type of oil, etc. I always keep a paper towel folded up in a groove somewhere under the hood so I can frequently check my oil. I also keep a spare fan belt and quart of oil with me. When replacing a fan belt, keep the old one if it’s still usable, for emergencies.
If you don’t know anyone who can help you learn about cars, try to educate yourself. This goes for guys, too. In the long run, it can save you time, money and headaches. - Shanna O’Brien, Tom C. Clark High School, San Antonio, Texas
