The San Jose Clash defeated Washington, D.C., United 1-0 in Major League Soccer’s inaugural game when Eric Wynalda curled in a 35-foot shot with less than 3 minutes left.

The nationally televised game attracted a sellout crowd of 31,683, though the Clash have sold only 3,000 season tickets.
