Flu Sidelines Griffey Jr.

Associated Press

After hitting his second home run in two games Saturday night, Ken Griffey Jr. was scratched from the lineup and sent home Sunday because of the flu.

He was running a 102-degree temperature.

Alex Diaz started in center field in his place. Manager Lou Piniella said Griffey will make the six-game road trip that begins Tuesday in Detroit.

A crowd of 21,004 gave the Mariners a first homestand attendance of 224,484, a 40 percent increase over Seattle’s first six home games last season.

Ricky Bones lost for the first time in four decisions against the Mariners.
