Symposium Aids Stutters

Nina Culver Correspondent

The National Stuttering Project is bringing its symposium to Spokane on Saturday. The one-day event is designed for adults and children who stutter, parents of children who stutter, and professionals who work with speech impediments.

The symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Meadow Ridge Elementary in Mead. The featured speaker will be Dorvan Breitenfeldt, professor of speech pathology at Eastern Washington University.

The purpose of the symposium is to offer information on treatment to families, connect families with available resources, and allow participants to share their experiences with stuttering.

Annie Bradberry, director of development and administration for the National Stuttering Project, says it is important that children who stutter find out that they are not alone. The symposium offers a chance for children to meet adults who stutter. “They see adult stutterers and they can see that they can be anything they want,” Bradberry says.

There is a $5 fee per individual or family for the event. Early registration is recommended. For more information, call the National Stuttering Project at (800) 364-1677 or Greg Dempsey at (509) 235-8050.
