LC State 10, WSU 7
Keith Habig’s grand slam home run in the third inning keyed the Warriors win over the Cougars in Lewiston.
Warrior starter Adam Huxhold (2-0) picked up the win as LCSC overcame WSU’s three-run first inning and late charge that pulled the Cougs within one run in the eighth. It was LCSC’s (25-8) second win in three games against WSU this season.
Cougar starter Dave Wheeler (0-2) took the loss for WSU (13-23). Wheeler worked into the fifth inning before Wayne Vezzetti took over. Brendan Grutz finished up for WSU, entering the game in the ninth.
Cougar senior Jered Fowler continued his torrid hitting with a single and a double while driving home four runs. Fowler Tuesday was named the Pacific-10 Conference North player of the week after hitting .450 in five games last week.
The Cougars took advantage of Huxhold’s wildness in the first inning to score three runs on just one hit.
Habig, who had two of the Warrior’s 12 hits, took care of WSU’s 3-1 lead in the third when he drilled a Wheeler pitch over the left field fence with the bases loaded.
LCSC added a pair of runs in the fifth for an 8-3 lead before WSU came back to score four unanswered runs.
WSU’s Mike Wetmore drove home one run in the sixth with a single and the Cougars picked up another run in the seventh, the result of three Warrior errors, two by short stop Allen Jackson, who mishandled the ball four times in the game. Fowler drove home WSU’s final two runs with a single in the eighth.
