Associated Press

American League

Mike Mussina pitched a two-hitter for his third straight victory and Rafael Palmeiro hit a three-run homer as the streaking Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 Friday night at Baltimore.

Thanks in part to Mussina, the Orioles (8-1) are off to the second-best start in the history of the franchise. They won their fourth in a row and improved to 6-0 at home.

Athletics 7, White Sox 2 Chicago

Carlos Reyes earned his first major league win as a starter and Scott Brosius drove in three runs as Oakland beat Chicago, ending Alex Fernandez’s eight-game winning streak.

Indians 3, Red Sox 1 Boston

Charles Nagy allowed five hits in eight innings, leading Cleveland past Boston in their first meeting since last year’s first-round playoff series.

Nagy (2-0) won Game 3 of the A.L. playoffs last October to complete the Indians’ sweep of the Red Sox. In his career, he has a 4-0 record with a 1.14 ERA at Fenway Park.

Angels 5, Tigers 4 Detroit

Richie Lewis threw two wild pitches that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score in the seventh, and California beat Detroit.

Royals 4, Brewers 1 Milwaukee

Kevin Appier struck out 11 in six innings and rookie Sal Fasano drove in two runs with his first major league hit as Kansas City beat Milwaukee.

Yankees 4, Rangers 3 New York

David Cone pitched seven strong innings and Ruben Sierra homered for the second straight game, giving New York a victory over Texas.

Texas, which won its first seven games of the season, lost its second in a row.

Puckett still hopeful

Kirby Puckett has what appears to be an early form of glaucoma and, while his baseball future remains uncertain, his eye specialist said Friday that he remains hopeful the Twins star will regain the lost vision in his right eye and return to the game.

The vision in Puckett’s right eye remains at 20/100 - it was 20/20 before he awoke with a black dot in his field of vision on March 28 and it was 5/200 when Glaser first saw him the next day.

Clearing the bases

Hank Aaron was at Fenway Park to give an award to Boston’s Mo Vaughn for leading the league in RBIs last year. Vaughn and Cleveland’s Albert Belle were co-winners with 126 RBIs each. Aaron skipped the opportunity to comment on one of baseball’s closest MVP races, which went to Vaughn on the strength of his team leadership. .. Frank Thomas has hit in all nine of Chicago’s games. .. Gary DiSarcina’s hitless streak for California extended to 16 at-bats.
