Lewiston Sweeps Pair From Lc

The Lewiston High School baseball team scored the winning run from second without the benefit of a hit to complete a sweep over visiting Lake City in an Inland Empire League double-header Saturday afternoon.

With Paul Laney running from second on a ground ball, a throw from the shortstop drew the first baseman off the bag. While LC protested the safe call, Laney scored as the Bengals prevailed 9-8 in eight innings.

In the first game, Lewiston topped the Timberwolves 8-3.

It was Lewiston’s first IEL victories of the season as the Bengals went to 4-7 overall and evened their league mark at 2-2. LC (5-7, 3-3) dropped its third league decision in four games.

Zach Manyon led Lewiston in the opener with a two-run triple and solo homer. LC’s Ryan Scharnhorst had four doubles.

LC committed seven errors in the second game.

In an IEL twinbill between Sandpoint and Post Falls at Sandpoint, the games were moved from a morning to evening start.

The doubleheader was still in progress at press time.

In an Intermountain League doubleheader at Rathdrum, Lakeland made quick work of visiting Bonners Ferry 6-1 and 10-0 in a run-rule shortened five-inning no-hitter. Hawks left-hander Brett DoBoer (3-1) recorded a career-high 20 strikeouts. In the second game, starter Kurt Reese (3-0) combined with Al Bevacqua on a no-hitter. Seven Hawks had singles to go with nine walks.

Lakeland raised its overall record to 9-2, 4-2 in league.

In an IML doubleheader at Priest River, the Spartans salvaged a split with a big win over Moscow 8-2 after the Bears triumphed in the opener 7-3.

“If we can control the errors we’d be dominant,” said Priest River coach Doug Stone, whose team improved to 2-6, 2-2. “We have the pitching and the hitting. The kids are coming around.”

Spartans pitcher Ricky Pettit went the distance in the second game, striking out seven. Keith Conley had a three-run double to lead Priest River at the plate.

In a pair of non-league games, St. Maries shut out Orofino 3-0 and 1-0 at St. Maries.

The Lumberjacks moved to 9-2 overall and earned two key wins that will go far in determining district seeding. Orofino joins Intermountain League teams in their state-qualifying district tourney.

Jason Holdahl (4-0) pitched a one-hitter in the opener, striking out eight. Brian Lounsbury hit a solo homer for St. Maries.

In the second game, J.D. Ragan (2-0) struck out seven and allowed no walks. Lane Watkins led the Lumberjacks with two hits and a Steve Raebel groundout scored the winning run.

Soccer

Lake City remained undefeated in league with an easy 5-0 victory at Bonners Ferry.

LC (7-1, 4-0) got a goal and two assists from Will Scott. The T-Wolves outshot Bonners Ferry 21-4.

Softball

Lake City may not run away from the Inland Empire League in fastpitch after all.

Sandpoint used a critical LC error and two walks for a five-run inning as the visiting Bulldogs topped the Timberwolves 6-4 in the opener.

LC (8-3, 5-1) bounced back to take the nightcap 9-3. Sandpoint (3-3, 3-1) and Coeur d’Alene (4-7, 3-1) are tied in second. Lewiston (1-4, 1-3) and Post Falls (0-7, 0-6) round out the league standings.

“It was one of those games,” LC coach Dwight Wilson said of his team’s first league loss. “You’ve got to give them credit for the win, but (the loss) was a lot of our making.”

Amber Barnes raised her record to 5-1 with the victory in the second game and she helped herself by knocking in three runs. Crystal Clark picked up the win for Sandpoint.

Regan Long led LC by going 5 for 6.

LC returns to action Friday when it visits CdA, which will be playing for the first time on its new field. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.

At Rathdrum, Lakeland smothered visiting Bonners Ferry 15-0, 10-0 in Intermountain League games shortened by the 10-run rule.

League-leading Lakeland (8-1, 5-1) got two fine pitching performances from Tiffany Hall and Jenni Borg. Hall no-hit the Badgers, striking out 11 and walking just two. Borg tossed a one-hitter.

In the first game, Monica Hall led with a two-run homer. In the second game, Angie Tweedy had a grand slam as the Hawks took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batters.
