Lake City Star Selects L-C State

Lake City High School basketball standout Scott Hoover will stay fairly close to home for college.

The 6-foot-5, left-handed Hoover, named the Inland Empire League’s most valuable player this past season, has orally committed to Lewis-Clark State College. He plans to sign a letter of intent today.

The Lewiston school plays in NAIA Division I, but plans to move to NCAA Division II soon.

“I think it’s going to be a good fit for me,” Hoover said. “They have a really good basketball program. We get to go to Hawaii and they always play some good teams. They beat Boise State last year. I feel I can excel there, but I’ll have to work really hard.”

Hoover, an honors student, is the lone Idaho prep LCSC plans to sign.

Hoover’s scoring average hovered around 12 points before he kicked it up a notch at midseason. With a strong finish, Hoover wound up averaging 16.2 points and 8.9 rebounds. He was an A-1 all-state second-team selection.

“There aren’t a lot of scholarship opportunities for kids, especially in basketball in Idaho,” LC coach Jim Winger said. “Other than (NCAA) Division I and junior colleges there are only five other schools that can offer scholarships like Lewis-Clark State. It’s a good place for him. It’s a national-level program… . They even had the (school) president call him. They were real sincere.”

Hoover’s LC teammate, Jon Chatfield, an A-1 first-team pick, hasn’t picked a college.

CFL to enshrine Campbell

Jerry “Soupy” Campbell, already twice enshrined where he grew up, now will receive a similar honor where he made his mark.

Campbell, a former Lewis and Clark High School and University of Idaho standout, who went on to a brilliant 10-year career in the Canadian Football League, was named to the Canadian football Hall of Fame.

He’ll be joined in induction ceremonies Sept. 28 by Dan Kepley, Al Benecick and Bill Clarke, also former players, and Frank Gibson of the Hamilton Tiger Cats, who’ll go in in the builder’s category.

Campbell, a member of the Inland Empire and Idaho halls of fame, was named All-CFL middle linebacker seven times and led Ottawa to the 1968 Grey Cup title.
