Dollar Rises As Mark Weakens

Associated Press

The dollar rallied broadly Thursday on new evidence of economic weakness in Germany and an influential German banker’s suggestion that the mark was overvalued against the U.S. currency.

The dollar’s greatest advance came against the European currencies but was less pronounced against the yen. That also was the indirect result of the mark’s retreat in foreign exchange dealings.

Many traders were selling marks to buy yen, pushing the Japanese currency to the highest level against the mark since early December 1995.
