Associated Press

National League

Pedro Martinez shut out Cincinnati on two hits over eight innings and added two runs batted in Friday as the Montreal Expos routed the visiting Reds 11-1.

Henry Rodriguez hit his 29th home run, drove in three runs and scored twice as the Expos ended the Reds’ three-game winning streak.

Darrin Fletcher went 3 for 5 for Montreal.

Martinez (9-6), who hit a two-run single in the third and doubled in the fifth, allowed a two-out double to Barry Larkin in the first before retiring 15 straight. Lenny Harris broke the string with a two-out, broken-bat single in the sixth.

Pirates 8, Phillies 3 Philadelphia

Jeff King, who had one hit in his previous 25 at-bats coming into the game, sparked a five-run ninth with a two-run triple as Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia.

Padres 2, Marlins 1 San Diego

Steve Finley tripled and scored on the play when the throw bounced past catcher Joe Siddall in the eighth, lifting San Diego over Florida.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1 Los Angeles

Pinch-hitter Billy Ashley, who had been 0 for 23 against right-handers, homered off John Smoltz (17-6) in the seventh, giving Los Angeles a win over Atlanta.

Ron Gant hit a fifth-inning grand slam and Todd Stottlemyre (10-7) beat New York for the third time this season to lead St. Louis.

Astros 5, Giants 1 Houston

Scully first felt shock

Vin Scully, Dodgers broadcaster for 46 years, was overseas on vacation this week and learned of Tom Lasorda’s retirement when he picked up a newspaper in London or Shannon, Ireland, he couldn’t remember which.

Scully said he first felt shock, then sadness, and wondered, “How could he have done that?” When he read farther, however, he saw that Lasorda mentioned the demises of Don Drysdale and John McSherry, both of whom died of heart attacks.

Clearing the bases

Colorado’s Andres Galarraga has grounded into just two double plays, making him the toughest to double up in the league, hitting into a double play every 205 at-bats. … Cincinnati is 50-0 when leading after eight innings. … Houston has 27 come-from-behind wins.

Mitch Williams’ comeback for Philadelphia continues to come upon tough times. Pitching Thursday night for Triple-A Scranton (Pa.), he went 1-1/2 innings, and surrendered seven hits, nine runs (seven earned) and two walks. … San Francisco has scored six runs in its last 11 games. … New York has homered in a club-record 18 consecutive games. … Florida’s Al Leiter has allowed five hits or more in just six of his last 16 starts.
