Even On The Little Screen, Real Men Often Do Cry

Some things are difficult to endure, even if what you are enduring is something pleasant.

For example, “NYPD Star” James McDaniel was all ready to make light of his Emmy nomination, his first, for his work on the top-rated NBC drama. When on a hike recently with some manly friends, McDaniel was asked how he felt about the honor.

“And I gave one of those answers, saying ‘Well, you know, you do your best work, you know you throw your hat into the ring.’ Every sports cliche I could come up with.”

But then McDaniel’s 9-year-old son set him straight. “No, Dad, no,” he said. “That’s not what happened. This morning you were crying.”

“I remember weeping a little bit,” McDaniels admitted. “It wasn’t a big boohoo. I got the sniffles.”

When word first broke that Aerosmith had fired its manager of 12 years, Tim Collins, word was that the 42-year-old Collins had since turned down offers to manage Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam and Bruce Hornsby, plus an offer to handle Kiss’ comeback tour. Now he says he was misquoted. “I didn’t say that,” he told the Boston Globe. “I would never talk publicly about any artists I turned down, nor would I want any artist to talk about me if I was turned down.”

Guccione exposes photos from the X-rated files

Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione has obtained what he claims are three photos depicting the autopsy of a space alien. “A photograph of Jesus Christ might be a comparable story to the first real photo of an extraterrestrial,” Guccione said. “Otherwise, there’s nothing that compares to this.”

But if space news isn’t interesting enough (see above item), the September issue of Penthouse magazine does a hatchet job (cliche intended) on actor-of-sorts Steven Seagal. According to the story, Seagal is a “slime ball” with a growing reputation for “thuggish behavior.” According to the story, “Seagal’s behavior is apparently so flagrant that the (Hollywood) code of silence is starting to crack.”

Stephen J. Cannell, author of his second novel (“Final Victim”), is a television writer and producer who has created or co-created more than 40 TV series including “The Rockford Files,” “The A-Team,” “Wiseguy” and “The Commish” - and written scripts for more than 350 shows. Asked by the San Francisco Chronicle to name his favorite fiction masters, he listed Lawrence Sanders, James Lee Burke, Michael Connelly and Joseph Wambaugh.
