Netanyahu’s Offer Rejected By Syria

Compiled From Wire Services

As the Clinton administration claimed Tuesday that both Israel and Syria are showing interest in reopening stalled peace talks, Syria publicly rejected an overture by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The State Department called Netanyahu’s latest offer “very promising.” But the Syrian government newspaper Tishrin described it Tuesday as “merely honey-coated and not serious talk about peace” because it did not include a promise to return the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Netanyahu, on his first official visit to Jordan as prime minister, expressed willingness to enter negotiations with Syria on “all outstanding matters.”

Syria has insisted that the fate of the Golan Heights, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War, must be resolved before it negotiates over the cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanese guerrillas.
