Top-seeded Steffi Graf, playing her first match since winning Wimbledon, beat Katrina Adams 6-4, 6-2 in the $450,000 Acura Classic, setting up a meeting with highly regarded teenager Venus Williams today at Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Jennifer Capriati, continuing a comeback after leaving the tour because of personal problems, withdrew from the tournament before her opening match because of a strained muscle.

Making his first ATP tour appearance, 18-year-old German Tommy Haas, a wild-card entry in the $1 million RCA Championship field at Indianapolis, used a strong service game in the second-round victory that took just 56 minutes and upset No. 8 seed Renzo Furlan 6-1, 6-2. Top-seeded Pete Sampras beat Don Johnson 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (8-10), 6-2.

Jim Courier defeated Mickael Tillstrom 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in the second round of the Pilot Pen International at New Haven, Conn.

Top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov, blanked in the first-set tiebreaker, recovered to beat Russian compatriot Andrei Olhovskiy 6-7 (0-7), 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round match.
