Pac-10 Stars Get Big Boost From Daniel

Washington State’s Carlos Daniel scored a game-high 23 points and dragged down 14 rebounds Friday to lead a Pacific-10 Conference all-star men’s basketball team to a 99-66 win over the Japanese National Team in Kobe, Japan.

Daniel, a junior-to-be from Louisville, Colo., made 10 of 12 field-goal tries in leading the Pac-10 stars to their third consecutive win over the host team. It was also their most lopsided victory.

USC’s David Crouse scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Washington’s Jason Hamilton added 12 points.

Isaac Fontaine, a teammate of Daniel’s at WSU, chipped in nine points and five assists from his point-guard position.

In a game between the Pac-10 women all-stars and Japan, WSU’s Kristin Erickson scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds to help her team to an 81-68 win.

Erickson was one of five all-stars to score in double figures. Oregon’s Arianne Boyer led the quintet with 13 points.

Both all-star teams will continue their overseas tours with games tonight in Fukui, Japan.

Sailing

Lake City Fleet 90 will serve as host for the District 19 J/24 sailing championships that start this morning at 10 on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The races, which will conclude with an awards ceremony at the Third Street Dock at 3 p.m. Sunday, will be conducted between 3-Mile Point and Arrowpoint.

Race officials expect between 12 and 15 entries, with competitors coming from as far away as Seattle and Montana’s Flathead Lake area.

Golf

Four Spokane-area golfers won their flights Friday in the final day of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Junior Boys’ Amateur Championships at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland.

Those winners included Matt Kodama (second flight), Jared Herling (third), Ryan Camp (sixth) and Brian Miacole (ninth).

Portland’s Anthony Arvidson won the championship flight by beating Jordon Bombier from Grande Prairie, Alberta, 4 and 2.

Sara Northcutt of Spokane defeated Federal Way’s Jessica McDougal 4 and 3 to win the sixth flight in the PNGA’s Junior Girls’ championships at LakeLand Village Golf Club in Allyn, Wash.

Bridget Johnson, also of Spokane, finished second in the the first flight.

Jerilyn White of Keizer, Ore., captured the championship flight by beating Taya Battistella of Bend, Ore., 7 and 6.

Jason Gore of Valencia, Calif., fired a final round of 2-under-par 70 at Redmond’s Sahalee Country Club Friday and captured the Northwest Players’ Championship by three strokes.

Gore’s 54-hole total of 211 was comfortably ahead of the 214 of runner-up Mike Ruiz of Las Vegas.

Colville’s Kent Brown shot a final-round 75 and was well back at 228. So was Spokane’s Darin Vaughan, who closed with a 75 and finished at 230.
