Saying Thank-You With Strings
The Nishinomiya Boys and Girls String Orchestra will deliver a musical thank-you to Spokane on Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Met.
These musicians, ranging in age from 9 to 21, will play a free concert to express appreciation for Spokane’s help after the 1995 earthquake devastated Nishinomiya. The orchestra was scheduled to come to Spokane earlier, but the tour had to be delayed because the earthquake destroyed their concert and practice halls.
Nishinomiya is one of Spokane’s sister cities. The group is expected to arrive in Spokane today and leave on Monday for Seattle. They will stay with a number of host families in Spokane. The traveling group, 65 strong, includes a number of former members, teachers, parents and chaperones.
In addition, there will be four koto players, who will play these traditional Japanese stringed instruments in the concert.
The concert will also include a medley of Japanese children’s folk songs; “Spring” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” and Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, First Movement.
There will be a get-together in the lobby of The Met after the concert.
