Tribe’s Sees Soaks Rocks
Eric Sees’ season-long slump appears to be over, but the same can’t be said about John Clark.
Sees, whose batting average just climbed past .200, drove in three runs with a double and triple Thursday night and Spokane beat Portland 9-4 with a five-run ninth inning.
The Civic Stadium crowd once again endured Clark’s shaky fielding. The Rockies shortstop committed four errors - three in the ninth - and has 33 for the Northwest League baseball season.
A throwing error by Clark started the final inning. After Kris Didion’s go-ahead, run-scoring single over a drawn-in infield, Clark botched Kenderick Moore’s grounder and threw wildly to first for two errors on one play.
Sees followed with a two-run triple - just his seventh and eighth RBIs of the year for an 8-4 lead.
Didion’s RBI triple in the fourth gave Spokane (29-34) a 4-1 lead, but Portland (26-37) tied the game with runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh.
Modesto Villarreal (2-4) pitched a strong eighth and ninth for the win. Loser Brian Hinchey (0-1) was victimized by five unearned runs.
