Iranian Teens Jailed, Whipped For Dancing

Compiled From Wire Services

Twenty-eight teenagers arrested for attending a dance party have been sentenced to jail terms, whippings and fines, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The party in a northern suburb of Tehran was raided by security forces, who arrested the teenagers and the 48-year-old owner of the house, said the Farsi-language newspaper Kayhan.

Iran’s puritanical Islamic laws forbid socializing between unmarried men and women. Women are required by law to be covered from head to toe in public. Western music is banned, though it is available on the black market.
