Mci Picks Nextwave For Cellular Service
MCI Communications Corp. Monday announced it has chosen NextWave Telecom Inc. to provide next-generation cellular telephone service to MCI customers in 63 U.S. cities.
The deal follows through on the long-distance giant’s strategy of leasing, rather than owning, the radio towers and equipment needed to provide wireless service.
MCI committed to buying, at an undisclosed price, 10 billion minutes of “air time” from NextWave, which will carry the wireless calls to MCI’s telephone switches. MCI, based in Washington, will market a wireless service under its own name and handle all billing, according to Whitey Blustein, MCI’s vice president of wireless strategy.
