Salmeen Among 10 Finalists
Swimmer Annette Salmeen of UCLA, a gold medalist in the Atlanta Olympic Games, is among 10 finalists selected for the 1996 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
The finalists were selected by a special committee made up of athletics administrators from NCAA member colleges and universities. The winner will be honored at an awards dinner Oct. 6 in Kansas City, Mo.
The finalists’ grade-point averages range from 3.480 to 4.000 and the overall average is 3.800.
Ruthie Bolton, the 5-foot-8 point guard who helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal, will not sign with the Portland Power of the fledgling American Basketball League.
The league assigned Bolton to Portland for the coming season, but the team was unable to come to terms with her.
Olympic track and field great Jackie Joyner-Kersee is one of four candidates to replace her.
