Nothstein Wins Gold

Compiled From Wire Services

Olympic silver medalist Marty Nothstein of Allentown, Pa., won the second world title of his career when he took gold in the Kierin race of the World Track Championships held at the Manchester velodrome.

Australia’s Shane Kelly won the 1-kilometer time trial, Italians Silvio Martinello and Marco Villa successfully defended their world title in the 50-kilometer Madison event, and Britain’s Chris Boardman needed only his first-round heat in the 4,000 meters (2.48 miles) to set a world record of 4 minutes, 13.353 seconds. The previous record of 4:19.699 was set by Italy’s Andrea Collinelli during the Atlanta Olympics.

Nothstein, who won the Kierin in 1994, was unable to defend his first world title in last year’s world championships due to injury. He led for most of the tense final lap and held off a last-ditch attack from Australia’s Gary Niewand.
