Anderson Lights Spark For Shadle

GSL/FL boys

For a season-opening basketball game, the postgame was perfect.

The winning coach saw the warts, the losing coach saw the roses.

Shadle Park went to West Valley and dumped the Eagles 74-61 Friday night as Chris Anderson poured in 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Highlanders.

“The first game always sticks,” Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner said. “You know how coaches are. If you get happy the first day, you have nothing to work on. We have some things we can get better on and we will.”

The Highlanders actually improved quicker than that, cutting their turnovers to three in the second half and taking a small edge in rebounding.

“Some of the sophomores came in and competed hard for their first game. They’re going to have to learn on the run,” West Valley coach Joe Feist said. “I give an A for effort and a C for execution. Shadle is a good team. We accomplished some of the things we wanted to.”

Down by six in the first quarter and up just two at halftime, Shadle, one of the favorites in the Greater Spokane League, got the lead to nine in the third quarter.

Only some shaky free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter kept the Highlanders from putting the perennial Frontier League favorites away before scoring the last seven points of the game.

“I figured we could play with them for a while if we didn’t get in foul trouble,” Feist said. “Then, boom. Foul trouble.”

The Eagles had one foul in the first quarter when taking a lead behind the 10 points of Josh Sweet. In the second quarter, Anderson made all five of his free throws and had 11 points.

Guards Nate Dunham and Ben Pate helped Anderson with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

“From my standpoint, we broke down mentally,” Weisner said.

He was talking about fouls and missed foul shots in the fourth quarter. Trying to put the game away, the Highlanders were only 11 of 19 from the line. They also allowed West Valley to get to the line to make 5 of 6 trying to play catchup.

Sweet finished with 15 for WV and 6-foot-6 Vinnie Pecht and point guard Jade Cardwell, in his first start, had 16 apiece.
