Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: My little dog was acting different. She usually is very peppy and eats like a horse, but her appetite dwindled and she wouldn’t play with anyone. My veterinarian said some people don’t recognize signs of illness, so he has written material for his patients’ owners to take with them.

First and foremost, loss of appetite.

Trembling is another sign. If your pet is not cold or excited, there may be something wrong.

Shallow breathing and heavy panting.

Whimpering, whining and crying.

Personality changes such as growling and snapping when touched in certain areas.

If your pet hides (especially cats), it could be a sign of pain. They usually retreat to a quiet place.

Any of these signs require a visit to the veterinarian. - Jodi Baker, Phoenix

When any of our three dogs shows unusual signs that we can’t figure out, it’s off to the vet! - Heloise
