Austrian Wins Women’s Downhill

Compiled From Wire Services

Austrian Renate Goetschl, so fast even a bobble on the steep slope leading to the finish line couldn’t slow her, claimed a downhill victory in the opening race of a rare World Cup ski doubleheader.

In a super-G held later in the day, Russia’s Svetlana Gladishiva bolted out of the third seed to post her first career World Cup victory. Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden and Carole Montillet of France finished 2-3.
