Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: My husband and I always argue about whether or not leaving the lights on in our home raises our electric bill that much. I say it does and he says it doesn’t. Since we work different schedules, I come home and find three or more lights on during the middle of the day. It drives me nuts. So who is right? - A.D., San Antonio

Well, how about both of you. You can save money by turning off lights. You may only save a few dollars a month, depending on how large your home is and how many lights your family keeps turned off, but it will definitely add up.

The experts say the cost of lighting can account for approximately 10 percent of the total energy consumption in your home.

Hint: If lights are left on, you can install timers or dimmer switches to reduce energy consumption and still give you peace of mind. - Heloise
