The Florida Marlins will raise their spending spree to a new level today when Alex Fernandez signs a five-year deal worth about $35 million, making him the team’s highest-paid player and baseball’s No. 2-paid pitcher, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Third baseman Todd Zeile agreed to a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a deal believed to be worth $10-$11 million.

Bret Saberhagen, the two-time Cy Young winner who missed the entire 1996 season because of shoulder trouble, has reached agreement with the Boston Red Sox on a one-year contract.
