Kramer Applies For Bsu Vacancy

Eastern Washington football coach Mike Kramer told the Boise Statesman newspaper he has applied for the head coaching job at Boise State.

According to a story slated to run in this morning’s paper, Kramer said he sent in his application Thursday.

“Heck yeah, I’m interested,” he told the Statesman. “That’s one of the premier jobs in the United States. I have no clue if I’m a viable candidate or not, but it can’t hurt. It’s a beautiful job.”

Kramer, who is 13-20 in three seasons as EWU’s head coach, did not return calls seeking additional comments Thursday night.

The Eagles finished 6-5 this fall, but lost four of their last five games.

The Boise vacancy is drawing interest from several other coaches with Inland Northwest ties.

Among others expected to apply are Art Valero, a BSU graduate and former Idaho assistant now at Utah State; Scott Linehan, a former Vandal assistant who is currently offensive coordinator at Washington, and Larry Lewis, the assistant head coach at Washington State and a BSU grad.

Tom Mason, BSU’s interim coach when Pokey Allen took a leave of absence for cancer treatments, also will pursue the job. Allen resigned earlier this week due to a recurrence of cancer.

Other names being mentioned in Boise as possible candidates are former Idaho coach Keith Gilbertson, UCLA offensive coordinator Al Borges, former UI assistant Gregg Smith, Oregon offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, Northern Arizona head coach Steve Axman and WSU defensive coordinator Bill Doba.

Turner signs with GU

Gonzaga University third-year women’s basketball coach Kellee Barney stayed in-state to sign a pair of players who will join the Bulldogs next fall.

Holly Turner, a 5-10 guard from Mead High in Spokane, and Melanie Tipps, a 6-1 center from Sumner High, signed letters-of-intent during the recent early signing period.

Turner was a first-team Greater Spokane League pick last season, and was named to the Pacific Northwest all-freshman and sophomore teams. She also earned All-GSL first-team honors in softball each of the past two seasons.

Tipps, from Bonney Lake, Wash., set the school’s single-game scoring record with 40 points last year while going on to win the South Puget Sound League scoring title and earning league MVP honors. She also competed in state competition in volleyball and track.
