Montana Wolf Pack Grows To Nine
Federal wildlife authorities have confirmed that a sizable new wolf pack is roaming north of Whitefish Lake.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Joe Fontaine said the pack has at least nine members, judging from howls and eyewitnesses. He said the group could be four adults and five new pups.
Last September, a government trapper captured a 90-pound gray male and fit it with a radio collar. Since then, officials have monitored the pack as it roams between Whitefish and Upper Whitefish Lake east of U.S. 93.
This brings the total to nine wolf packs in Montana, six of them in the northwest corner of the state.
The state’s recovery goal is 10 packs of the endangered species.
