She Remembers Her Hits By Keeping Her Duds

Glenn Close keeps her career in the closet.

“I have all my costumes from all my films down to the jeans from ‘The Big Chill,”’ she tells People magazine, “because if I’m able to fit into them ever again, I’ll have nirvana.”

The collection includes Close’s campy Cruella De Vil outfit from “101 Dalmatians,” with one exception - the 4-inch spiked heels. “I was in deep pain most of the time,” she said.

There’s even a prop butcher knife from “Fatal Attraction.” Explains Close: “It’s only a cardboard knife. In the close-ups, when I was near Michael Douglas’ face, they wouldn’t allow me to have a real knife.

“It’s hanging near my kitchen pantry. People always say, ‘Is that what I think it is?’ From the start, they know not to mess with me.”

Loose talk

Director Garry Marshall, on “Dear God” star Greg Kinnear (in USA Today): “He’s perfect for light romantic comedy. Plenty of guys can talk over gunfire, but he’s glib and innocent. He has that ‘Please don’t send me to a Turkish prison’ face.”

The diagnosis will probably be natural causes

Dick Van Dyke turns 71 today.

Well, as Frank himself might say, that’s life

Frank Sinatra, who celebrated his 81st birthday Thursday, is reportedly “in very poor health” and will never perform again. The New York Post quoted friends as saying Sinatra suffered a stroke during his recent hospitalization and sometimes has trouble speaking. Said one: “Those days are over. He will never sing in public again.”

Here’s hoping the Fog rolls out again soon

Mel Torme, who developed pneumonia following a stroke he suffered in August, is back in the hospital for monitoring after being home for only a month. “It’s nothing to be alarmed about,” the 71-year-old singer’s spokesman said.

Talk about your Slim chances of survival

Slim Whitman, who for some reason is still alive and kicking, plays a pivotal role in saving the Earth in the new movie “Mars Attacks!” - or, at least, his high-pitched yodel does. “I’m proud of it,” the quirky country crooner says. “The president, the Army, they couldn’t do it. So, here comes Whitman.”

Must be one of those 12-step steroid cases

Action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, “The Muscles from Brussels,” has checked into a Los Angeles hospital for a 30-day substance abuse program, his publicist said. Van Damme’s wife, Darcy, filed for divorce in June, but they’ve since reconciled.

Guess he won’t be anybody’s happy meal ticket

Dalmatians may be everywhere these days, but don’t look for any commercial spinoffs from the new Walt Disney production of “The Absent-Minded Professor.” Star Robin Williams has refused to let his image be used for commercial purposes, Variety reports, turning down “oodles” of money from the McDonald’s hamburger chain.
