Strong Start Fuels Lc Over North Central

Lewis and Clark’s wrestling team, a Greater Spokane League power a generation ago, has struggled in recent years.
Yet LC started off on the right foot Thursday, with a 36-33 upset of visiting North Central as GSL teams began league dual meets.
Pins by Dan Wittenberg (135 pounds), Josh Dalager (148), Ronnie Russomanno (158) and Neil Carson (168) gave the Tigers a 36-8 lead with five matches left. LC needed the points because the Indians won by a pin, a forfeit, a technical fall and two major decisions to close the night.
LC coach Dan Thew said he couldn’t remember his last win over NC.
Thew thought the Tigers were in trouble when Nick Stewart (115) and Josh Knox (122) won to give NC an 8-6 lead after three matches. The next six matches belonged to LC.
Next week the Tigers meet Central Valley, second at state last year. CV was idle Thursday.
In other league openers co-defending champs Gonzaga Prep and University won, Prep 46-22 over Ferris and U-Hi 65-12 over Rogers. Also, Mead topped Shadle Park 66-3.
At Ferris, returning state placers Chris Montgomery (108) and Cory Brannon (122), and defending district champion Nick Bliss (148) had three of their team’s six pins as the Bullpups beat the Saxons.
At Rogers, the Titans had eight pins, including five to end the match, to beat the Pirates. In two competitive matches won by U-Hi, Jared Osborn (121) beat Daryl Groom 7-3 and Ed Stretch (141) beat Daryn Steeneck 6-3.
At Mead, the Panthers had five pins and picked up another 18 points on forfeits to beat the Highlanders. Mead’s Jon Rugan (122), second at state last year, earned a 23-8 technical fall. At 148, Mead’s Nick Trefry edged Casey Laughery 7-5. Drew Sullivan (168) earned Shadle’s win, a 6-4 decision over Keith Stamps.
