Western Captures Title At Whitworth
Kari Gruendell scored the go-ahead basket with 50 seconds to play, spurring eighth-ranked Western Washington to a 72-69 victory over Whitworth Sunday in the championship game of the Ridpath Hotel/Whitworth Invitational women’s basketball tournament.
The Vikings, led by the 18 points of Shannon Grandbois, improved their record to 4-1. Guard Rebecca Moore scored 22 points for Whitworth, which fell to 4-3.
Grandbois joined Whitworth’s Sherri Northington and Jen Tissue on the all-tournament team. Sunday, Northington scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Pepperdine 56, Idaho 47
The host Vandals went scoreless for 6 minutes midway through the second half and allowed the Waves to pull away for a non-conference women’s basketball victory.
Men’s basketball
Randy Moffatt poured in 24 points as the Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Capillano CC 83-55 at Spokane Community College.
Saturday, Kasey Ahrens put in 17 points and Moffatt scored 15 as CCS thumped visiting Douglas CC 85-40.
Prep wrestling
Marcus Mays, Ellensburg’s 129-pounder, earned most valuable wrestler honors Saturday and Mead High School claimed the team title in the Inland Empire Classic.
Mead scored 139 points, 10 more than host Central Valley. Moses Lake was third with 122 points.
Auto racing
Spokane’s Marc Groskreutz finished second in the second round of the NASCAR Winter Heat racing series and moved into a tie for the points lead at Tucson Raceway Park in Tucson, Ariz.
