Dragons’ League Streak Ends At 110

The longest league winning streak in state history ended Tuesday when visiting Selkirk made 19 of 26 free-throw attempts to beat St. George’s 49-47 in a Panorama League opener.

The Dragons (0-5, 0-1) had won 110 consecutive league games, dating back to January 1990 in a game at Hunters against Columbia. St. George’s hadn’t lost a home league game since 1988.

Molly Carlson scored 19 and Tara Porter made 8 of 8 free throws for the Rangers (4-1, 1-0). St. George’s outscored Selkirk by 15 from the floor but lost the game at the line.

“It was a tremendous run,” Dragons coach Ross Thomas said of the streak. “It is good to get (the loss) out of the way early. I’m glad it didn’t happen at the end of league.”

Columbia held Curlew to 27-percent shooting from the field. Carmen Craw’s 11 rebounds led Curlew to a 33-28 edge.
