Irma (Luck) Chapman Spokane
Visitation for Irma G. (Luck) Chapman, 92, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mrs. Chapman, who died Monday, was born in Spokane.
She attended Lewis and Clark High School and worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Northwest Bell, Fairchild Air Force Base, Playfair Race Course and the Spokane Police Department.
Her husband, Ross Chapman, died in 1988. She is survived by two daughters, Darlene Barnhouse of Spokane and Kathleen Carlton of Lynnwood, Wash.; a son, Charles Chapman of Kennewick; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Bertha Jones Spokane
Rosary for Bertha V. Jones, 90, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jones died Sunday.
She was born in Georgia.
She married William Jones in 1927, and they moved to Spokane in 1947.
She received nurses’ training at Sacred Heart School of Nursing and worked as a private duty nurse in the Spokane area.
She was a poetry and fiction writer and attended Whitworth College late in life to become a better writer. She made her acting debut with the Spokane Civic Theatre while in her 70s.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
Her husband died in 1966.
She is survived by a son, Darrel Jones of Spokane; two daughters, Verna Sloan of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Mary Tinnell of Yakima; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Eileen Girnus Otis Orchards
Service for Eileen H. Girnus, 72, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pines Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Girnus, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.
She attended North Central High School.
She was a member of the Meatwrappers Union and worked in various grocery stores for 15 years. She was also a member of the Tacoma Inboard Racing Association and raised thoroughbred racehorses.
She was a resident of Otis Orchards for 25 years.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Walt Girnus; a son, Victor Girnus; a daughter, Lana Girnus; a brother, Jack Munson; a sister, Norma Menzies; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Della Rossworn Spokane
Memorial service for Della E. Rossworn, 74, is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Mrs. Rossworn died Saturday.
She was born in Colfax and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Donald Rossworn; three sons, Bruce Rafford of Everett, Bradley Rafford and Bart Rossworn, both of Spokane; a sister, Janice Brandt of Spokane; a brother, George Beeman of St. Louis; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Lawrence Lothspeich Colfax, Wash.
Rosary for Lawrence J. “Larry” Lothspeich, 88, will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colfax. Funeral Mass is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lothspeich, who died Monday, was born in Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School.
He attended Washington State University for a year and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He then went to work for the Whitman County Engineer’s Office and was part of the survey crew that planned the current road up Steptoe Butte.
He joined the Army in 1940 and served as a second lieutenant with the combat engineers.
In 1941 he married Virginia Harding.
Following the war, they settled in Olympia and worked for the state Highway Department.
In 1950 he and his wife returned to Colfax to operate his sister’s wheat farm. He was named Port of Whitman manager in 1970, and he retired from that job in 1977.
He was involved with the expansion and development of the ports at Central Ferry, Almota and Wilma.
Mr. Lothspeich was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Colfax Elks Lodge.
His wife, Virginia, preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Bob Lothspeich of Colfax; a daughter, Lynn “Susie” McDonough of Redmond, Wash.; a sister, Mary Brodie of Colfax; and five grandchildren.
Helen Brockway Columbia Falls, Mont.
Graveside service for Helen Brockway, a former Spokane resident, was Dec. 3 in Missoula.
Mrs. Brockway, who died Nov. 28, was born in Kiefer, Okla.
She had lived in Spokane for 20 years and recently moved to Columbia Falls, Mont.
She was a member of Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church in Spokane.
Survivors include, her husband, Pat Brockway of Denver; a daughter, Bealuh Brittenham; three sons, Billy, Joe and Dean; a stepdaughter, Patsy; a sister, Bertha Booth of Spokane; a brother, Danie Garoutte of Circle, Mont.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dallas Matkin Spokane
Family memorial will be held for Dallas H. Matkin, at his request. An open house is planned from noon to 4 p.m. today at the family home. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Matkin, who was born in Plentywood, Mont., died Monday. He was 65.
He moved to Spokane in 1944 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, and Washington State University with a degree in pharmacy.
He entered the Air Force and retired as a major.
He co-owned Herbison’s Pharmacy on Northwest Boulevard until he retired in 1993 after 37 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Matkin; a son, Mark Matkin; a daughter, Michelle Sherwood; a stepson, Jim Lammers; a brother, Merritt Matkin, and a sister, Alta Michlik, both of Seattle; and four grandchildren.
David Foltz Dallas
Service for David Werner Foltz, 35, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Foltz died Sunday in Dallas.
He was born in Spokane and graduated from Ferris High School.
He served in the Air Force for four years immediately after high school.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina.
He worked in North Carolina a number of years and recently moved to Texas, where he was the human resource manager for Optek Technologies in Dallas.
Mr. Foltz is survived by his mother, Barbara Foltz of Spokane; a brother, Stephen Foltz of Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.; and a sister, Carolyn Foltz Fischer of Spokane.
Merlin Kissler Odessa, Wash.
Visitation for Merlin E. Kissler, 67, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Heritage United Church of Christ. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Odessa, Mr. Kissler died Monday.
He graduated from Odessa High School and served in World War II in the Navy.
In 1960 he married Nelly Bueschke in Coeur d’Alene.
They operated a wheat farm in Odessa.
He was a member of Heritage United Church of Christ, the Odessa Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.;
Mr. Kissler is survived by his wife; a daughter, Julie Buckland of Salt Lake City; a son, Troy Kissler of Odessa; a brother, Melvin Kissler of Odessa; and a sister, Virginia Humble of Napa, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Veta Lock Seattle
Service for Veta M. Lock, a former Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Alki Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle.
Mrs. Lock, who was born in Spokane, died Monday. She was 78.
She was born in Spokane and worked at the Palace Department Store.
She married Louis Lock in 1947, and they moved to Seattle in 1963.
She is survived by her husband.
Martha Nail Baker City, Ore.
Private burial for Martha Luella Nail, a former Spokane resident, will be at Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro, Ore. Coles-Strommer-Monroe Funeral Home in Baker City, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Nail, 94, died Sunday.
She was born in Waukon, Wash., and was raised in Spokane.
She married Lee Nail in 1923. They moved to Chewelah, Wash., where they farmed.
In 1943 they returned to Spokane where they both worked for the military as civilians during World War II.
They moved to Myrtle Creek, Ore., in 1947 and to Cornelius, Ore., in 1952.
Her husband died in 1972, and Mrs. Nail returned to Spokane. In 1983 she moved to Baker City to be near her daughter.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna St. John of Baker City; a grandson and two great-grandsons.
Hilda Casey Snohomish, Wash.
Rosary for Hilda Louise Casey, 85, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint. Private burial will follow at the Hope (Idaho) Cemetery.
Mrs. Casey, who was born in Ione, Ore., died Saturday.
She attended schools in Sandpoint, graduating from high school in 1931 in Hope.
She moved to Spokane, where she worked for a book bindery and at Kaiser Aluminum’s Mead Plant before moving to Snohomish.
Mrs. Casey was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.
Survivors include two brothers, James Hoss of Hope, and Donald Hoss of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews. , DataTimes
