Commission Gives Playfair 66 Dates For Summer-Fall Meet
Officials at Playfair Race Course got an early Christmas present Friday: 66 days of racing in the summer and fall.
The Spokane track was authorized to run from Aug. 13 through Dec. 1, 1997 by the Washington Horse Racing Commission.
Included in the 66-day season are 45 days of statewide simulcasting, beginning at the conclusion of the season at Emerald Downs in Auburn. Playfair will also have a statewide audience on Wednesdays in September, when the season here overlaps with Emerald.
Emerald Downs will open its 125-day 1997 meeting on March 27. The Auburn track will close Sept. 29.
Playfair officials continue to point to an opening day next Friday for a winter meet here, the first winter season for the track that was built in 1935.
Yakima Meadows does not have a licensed operator. The commission is conducting hearings on an application from the Central Washington Fair Association.
The commission said in Friday’s order that Yakima is Washington’s winter racing facility. Commissioners will wait to award ‘97-98 winter days pending the outcome of the license procedure at Yakima Meadows.
