Consider Donating Old Computer

If a new computer is on your Christmas wishlist to replace an older model, consider donating your used computer to a worthy cause.

Career Connections is in need of 386-plus computers with Windows capabilities. They also need printers, keyboards and other peripherals.

The nonprofit organization has served Spokane for more than 35 years, assisting people with disabilities gain independence through employment readiness and placement. The computer equipment would be used in job readiness programs.

Youth events

Don’t miss the final children’s event in conjunction with the Treasures of Antiquities exhibit at Cheney Cowles Museum, 2316 W. First.

On Saturday, kids 9 and older are invited to construct and paint Greek amphoras - pots to hold a variety of liquids.

Two classes are offered: 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $9 for museum members, $11 for non-members.

Friday is the last day to register for the YWCA Girls 3-on-3 Basketball League which begins its next session on Jan. 13.

This is the only league specifically for girls, 6 to 12 years old. Space is limited, so early registration is suggested.

Volunteers are needed to coach the teams and serve as referees. If you can volunteer or would like to register a player, call 326-1190, ext. 119; or stop by the YWCA office, 829 W. Broadway.

Seniors

Seniors, 55 and older, can start the new year learning about computers, discussing a book or conversing in a foreign language.

The Seniors Program at the Community Colleges of Spokane begins Winter Quarter 1997 with a wide variety of classes at locations throughout Spokane.

Consider a Writers’ Workshop or a class in watercolor. “Explore Music Through the Ages” or “Family Genealogy.” There are dozens of classes and workshops available in an array of topics.

Class tuition has been reduced by nearly 30 percent this year to make the classes more affordable. Tuition ranges from $5 to $30 per quarter with scholarships available to those in need of financial assistance.

Project Joy, a senior service program, is seeking volunteers 50 and older to use their talents to benefit others. The nonprofit group provides entertainment for convalescent centers and retirement communities as well as fraternal and civic organizations. Project Joy is sponsored by Spokane Parks and Recreation Department.

There are volunteer openings to play in a kitchen band or orchestra, or perform as clowns, puppeteers, minstrels or actors.

Community notes

Entries are being accepted for the 10th anniversary crowning of Mrs. Washington.

To be eligible, women must be married for at least two years, be between 24 and 56 years old, U.S. citizens and Washington state residents.

The Mrs. Washington Pageant on April 26 will showcase the achievements and contributions of women in areas of marriage, family and community. There will be no swimsuit competition.

The winning contestant will represent the state of Washington at next summer’s national finals in Texas.

Sadly, there is an increase in reported domestic violence cases during the holidays. But victims should not feel alone.

YWCA’s Alternatives to Domestic Violence program urges victims to call for help. The number for the 24-hour crisis hotline is 326-CALL (326-2255).

“The YWCA provides an array of services and programs for adults and children,” says Carolyn Morrison, program director. “Help is only a phone call away.”

In addition to the crisis hotline, the YWCA offers a confidential safe shelter for women and children, transportation services and more.
