Jackie O’S Estate Less Than Expected

Despite an auction of personal effects last spring that fetched nearly $30 million more than expected, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ estate was worth less than the original $100 million estimated value, state officials say.

Onassis’ executors say the estate originally was worth $43.7 million. But according to a report in Saturday’s New York Times, after subtracting administrative costs and items kept by the children, the estate is worth just $18 million - and could owe $23 million in taxes.

The shortfall apparently scuttles a plan to create a charitable trust that would have generated a total of $192 million for charities until it passed to the grandchildren in the year 2018.

Instead, because of the shortfall, the estate will go to Jackie’s heirs, her children, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and John F. Kennedy Jr.
