Wallace Out Indefinitely

Associated Press

Portland forward Rasheed Wallace will under-go surgery Thursday for a broken left thumb and will be out indefinitely.

Wallace was injured in the second quarter of the Trail Blazers’ 106-84 home loss Monday to the Washington Bullets. Wallace broke his thumb in the same place it was fractured last season, when he missed 17 games.

Trail Blazers spokesman John Christensen said team physician Dr. Don Roberts examined Wallace on Tuesday.

Wallace was averaging 15.6 points and seven rebounds in his second year in the league. He was the NBA’s leader in field goal percentage with .585.

Wallace was hurt when Juwan Howard tried to strip him of the ball on a drive to the basket.
